Our Work

Our work comprises of a Children’s Home in Chennai, India, supporting impoverished kids and their families in SriLanka, and helping children who are victims of war in Uganda.

Children’s Home

In Chennai, India, RoHI runs a home for children who are orphaned or have been abandoned by their care givers.  Currently, our Home has 25 children, both boys and girls of varying ages.

In a community ravaged with poverty, children often become the victims of the harsh realities and circumstances that poverty breeds.  We have children who have lost one or both of their parents to sickness, suicide, alcohol and/or prison,  Children who have been physically abused and/or poisoned, Children who’s parents did not want them, Children who’s parents cannot care for them due to their economic circumstances, Some children have been brought in because of the death of one parent which resulted in the economic collapse of the family leaving the other parent unable to look after the child.

At our Home these children are provided with a safe home to live in, food, clothing, schooling (tuition for school, school supplies, books, uniforms, shoes, bus fare, tutoring, etc.), post-secondary education and/or vocational training, health care, gifts at Christmas or any time someone visits from Canada, emotional care (given love, support, encouragement, etc) by the staff of our home and spiritual nourishment (brought up knowing the love of their Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ).  These children are well taken care of by the staff of Hebron Faith Home.  They become apart of a large family that is supportive and nurturing to one another.  These children are the fortunate ones because there is hope for them to have a better future leaving the past circumstances behind.

The children remain at the Home until they are reclaimed by a family member or until they can be self-sufficient.

Supporting Impoverished Children

The Central Province of Sri Lanka is breath takingly beautiful with its waterfalls, mountains, valleys and tea estates as far as the eye can see.  But, among this beauty are some of the poorest people in Sri Lanka.  Even with a two income household, finances can be insufficient for day to day living, as the cost of living is disproportionate to income.

RoHI provides financial support to children of impoverished families to help them come out of this cycle of poverty.  We fund their education (transportation to and from school, tuition/registration fees for school, uniforms, school supplies, tutoring, etc), food and health care.

These children are cared for until they turn 18 or become self-sufficient (help with vocational training and/or post-secondary education where possible).

Income Generation

We are striving also to equip the parents of the children we currently care for and members of their community with job skills and/or funding to establish small businesses that can benefit the entire family and the villages they live in.  Our goal is to see these families become self-sufficient and in return be able to help others financially within their community.

For over 23 years Northern Uganda was at war with a rebel army called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). During the time of war, 1.2 million people were displaced and forced by the Ugandan Government into Internal Displaced Person Camps. After spending years in fear of the LRA and living in the IDP camps the family structure and the cultural life of the people has been destroyed. Livestock, crops, water sources, land, schools and homes were devastated during this season. Over 30 000 children were abducted as child soldiers by the LRA. Boys that were abducted were forced to kill brutally and girls were forced to become sex slaves and wives to the LRA commanders.

Northern Uganda is ready to move beyond the trauma of war. This cannot be done quickly. With the mass destruction of this region many are struggling just to find food. After spending years in the IDP camps the people have lacked in education, farming, and their family culture. In order to survive many young girls have succumbed to selling their bodies for basic hygiene products and for food. Water sources were destroyed during the war and many travel miles to unclean streams to collect water to drink.

It is a new season for Northern Uganda and the people are hungry to return to the way of life that they once knew. ROHI (Rock of Hope International) in partnership with Tricia de Boer from Africa Arise (africaarise.ca) has begun the process of restoring the nation of Uganda. In October of 2009 ROHI provided toothpaste, toothbrushes, blankets, soap, vaseline and sanitary products to over 90 children. We also have been able to provide a water catchment that will bring water to over 400 people.

We are blessed to assist our brothers and sisters in Uganda and we look forward to more opportunities!

RoHI has invested not only in individual children but also the communities they live. As we have done in the past by building wells and having health camps, we continue to look for opportunities to serve communities.

Learn how we are making a difference in the lives of our children.
